Companies that are leading the way understand that people are critical in today’s competitive Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. So, if you’re being interviewed for a BPO job at a top company like Wipro, make sure you are well-prepared.
To begin with, it’s important to understand the BPO recruitment process, which involves multiple stages. The initial interview rounds focus on assessing your language skills, specifically your ability to speak English fluently and think quickly on your feet. In the first round, candidates are asked to introduce themselves and speak on a given topic.
If you do well in this round, you move on to the next stage, which is an automated speech evaluation test. This test evaluates your fluency, pronunciation, listening, and comprehension skills in English. Candidates who are shortlisted then proceed to a personal interview (PI) round, followed by an operations interview conducted by a Wipro employee.
If you are applying for a back office or technical job, you may also be required to take a computer proficiency test. Those who successfully clear the operations interview are offered jobs.

Q1) Tell me about yourself
Your answer should focus on information that is relevant to the job, and not your life history. Share any strengths, including skills and experiences, as well as past successes.
For instance, experienced candidates can say – “I have been in the BPO industry for the past XX years. My most recent experience has been handling incoming calls for the XX industry. One reason I particularly enjoy this business is because it allows me to connect with people.
What I am looking for now is a challenging position where I can effectively contribute my skills learn new ones, and ensure my growth through the organisation’s growth.”
If this is your first job, find a way to connect what you did in college to the job – e.g., any activity that showcases your strong communication skills. Then you can move on to talking about how you love connecting with people, etc. as mentioned above.
Q2) What do you know about a BPO?
This is usually a question for freshers, to weed out applicants who apply for a BPO job without actually knowing what the job entails. It’s best to provide a broad outline of what a BPO company does – which is the contracting of specific business tasks.
This can be back office outsourcing, which includes internal business functions such as salaries, human resources (HR) or accounting, or front office outsourcing services, which involves customer interactions by phone, etc. Be sure to mention that aspect of the operation which involves the job you are applying for.
Q3) Why do you want to work at a BPO?
This is especially relevant if you have an engineering degree/diploma; recruiters may think that you are overqualified for a call centre job. Your answer should emphasise the advantages of being in this industry – the chance to strengthen your communication skills and improve your personality, be part of a booming industry and enjoy the salary and perks that come with the job.
Q4) Why should we hire you?
You are being given the chance to show them you are a good match for the job. Think of two or three key qualities you have to offer that match those the employer is seeking. In this case, your energy, personality and people skills are especially relevant.
You could say – “I’ve always been a people person, and feel confident about talking to someone I’ve never met over the phone. I have excellent communication skills and I also have the experience to stay focused in stressful situations. I’m confident I would be a great addition to your team.”
Q5) What are your strengths and weaknesses?
It’s important to emphasise what you’re good at, and minimise—but be truthful about—what you’re not.
While dealing with the latter, select a trait and come up with a solution to overcome your weakness. For, you could say – “I used to be a little disorganised but I have started keeping my checklist which I regularly monitor, and that has helped me improve my organisational skills.”
When it comes to your strengths, focus on skills acquired through education (computer, technical diplomas, etc) and portable skills (good with people, great planner). Personal traits – being dependable, flexible, friendly, punctual and a team player – should also be showcased here.
Q6) Are you comfortable handling customers on the phone?
The answer has to be yes. If you can, cite instances of how you’ve successfully handled business calls in the past.
Q7) Are you comfortable working night shifts?
India is a key hub for offshore BPOs. Most of these BPOs have international clients from countries like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc that operate in a different time zone from India, which means the day and night cycle is different. When it’s daytime in their countries, it’s night here, and vice versa.
Hence employees in Indian call centers have to work nights. So if you have any reservations about the night shift, this may not be the right career for you. Always answer this question with a yes.
However, if you have any health condition that may be aggravated by shift work, do bring it up.
Q8) What are your salary expectations?
If this is your first job, your response ought to be “as per company norms/industry standards”. To avoid any awkwardness if you’re asked to quote a salary number, find out what the pay scales are by checking the Monster Salary Index. If you have previous experience in the field, consider asking for a 20-30% hike, which is the industry norm.
Q9) Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
To answer this question well, you need a plan that looks ahead to the results you want to achieve. E.g., if you are interviewing for a beginner’s role, you can say – “I see myself in a management role in five years which would allow me to demonstrate my leadership skills. With dedicated hard work, I hope to grow both my career and the company.”
Q10) Do you have any questions?
Asking questions is as important as answering questions. For it highlight your suitability as a candidate and find out more about the role and the company. Some basic questions you could ask are:
• Can you tell me more about the daily responsibilities of this job?
• What is the typical career path for someone in this role?
• How will you judge my success?
• What is the next step in the interview process?
In addition to all these questions, you’ll probably be expected to demonstrate your technical know-how so read up on Java Beans, Java Script and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), to name a few programmes. Also, know the difference between:
On-shore and Off-shore outsourcing: The former involves outsourcing operations in the same country or region, while the latter is sending business to a company in a foreign country. There is also near-shore outsourcing, where business goes to an adjacent or nearby country having similar culture and language skills.

Inbound and Outbound call centres: The former only receives calls while the latter places calls as well.
KPO and BPO: A KPO, or knowledge process outsourcing company, provides knowledge and information-related work while a BPO is customer service oriented.

Interview Process at Wipro
Wipro’s interview method is divided into three phases.
- Assessment: It begins with an online assessment phase, including an aptitude test, coding (for technical candidates), and essay writing.
- Technical round: Following this stage, candidates must attend the technical round of the interview, when interviewers test the candidate’s skill sets. It includes questions about the desired work profile. This round can be conducted either in person or by video call.
- HR interview round: During the third phase, candidates must go through an HR interview round to see whether they are a good fit for the organisation.
Assessment
The online assessment test is the first stage in the job process. Candidates who have passed this level will be called to technical interviews.
Aptitude
At Wipro, the Aptitude Test is the initial step in the recruitment process.
Quantitative Skills
This phase will assess the candidate’s mathematical problem-solving abilities. In addition, this Quantitative Aptitude Test covers topics such as speed and distance, time, simple and compound interest, number series, probability, ratios and proportions, percentages, permutation, and combination.
Logical Reasoning
This component will examine the applicant’s critical and logical reasoning skills. This section includes issues on data interpretation, data sufficiency, logical word sequence, data layouts, assertions and conclusions, coding, decoding, inequalities, series, analogies, and visual reasoning.
Ability to Communicate
In this phase, the candidates’ English abilities will be examined. The examination questions in this section mostly address error detection, sentence completion and improvement, and para-jumbles, among other things.
Essay Writing
The inscription component includes an essay writing test that can be based on any subject or event. Candidates must submit an essay of around 400 words on the chosen topic. It’s also a computer-based examination. An excellent Wipro essay should have the following characteristics: good essay structure, organisation, terminology (grammar, punctuation, and spelling), and vocabulary.
Coding
Candidates can take this test in any programming language, including Java, C, Python, and C++. Learn the fundamentals of coding in at least one programming language. This round usually includes two or three code problems. Looping, arrays, functions, and strings are some examples of decision-making subjects.
Experienced candidates will be eligible to skip the online evaluation process based on the company’s criteria and job descriptions.
Round of Technical Interviews
Candidates who complete the online assessment will be contacted for technical interviews.
During a technical interview, your technical abilities are evaluated, which are typically related to the technical knowledge required for the position you have applied for. These questions will put your ability to solve problems and think numerically to the test. In addition to technical knowledge, interviewers are interested in how applicants tackle problems, develop their cognitive processes, and display personal abilities like communication.
The face-to-face technical interview is the most important part of the procedure. Candidates must explain certain computer basics to the interviewer, such as DBMS, CN, OOPS, and OS. Make sure you can programme in at least one language. You are not required to be fluent in all programming languages, but you should be familiar with at least one, such as Java, C++, or Python. You may be asked to write code as well. The interviewer will also assess your ability to solve complex challenges. You will be asked about your previous projects and job experiences, such as what you did, how you used technology, and how effective you were.
The number of technical interviews you’ll have is determined by your previous round performance, job description, and employer requirements.
HR Round
Every organisation conducts an HR interview round to assess your character, strengths, shortcomings, and capacity to fulfil the project, as well as your upbringing, and determine if you’re the greatest fit for the position.
