This role will provide leadership within the mechanical discipline, ensuring exceptional project outcomes, and will involve close client and contractor interaction during the design phase. Candidates with prior experience in the Middle East and hotel design are preferred.
The Role
As an Associate Director, you will be a key member of our collaborative, multidisciplinary Buildings team in Dubai, responsible for driving innovative and sustainable mechanical solutions. Working alongside a team of leading engineers, architects, and technicians, you'll solve complex technical challenges, support coordination efforts, and ensure the successful execution of high-profile projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Leadership: Lead the mechanical design discipline within the large hotel resort project, ensuring quality outcomes for both Arup and our clients.
- Client and Contractor Interaction: Act as a primary client interface, developing strong relationships and addressing project needs. Work closely with contractors and stakeholders to address coordination issues and technical challenges during the design phase.
- Innovative Problem Solving: Apply creative, analytical, and detailed thinking to evaluate options and impacts, ensuring designs meet technical, commercial, and sustainability goals.
- Technical Coordination: Manage and integrate multidisciplinary requirements into cohesive design solutions, adhering to project deadlines and budget constraints.
- Team Leadership: Mentor and develop the mechanical engineering team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture aligned with Arup's sustainable and ethical values.
- Business Development Support: Assist in identifying opportunities for expanding our sector presence and participate in the development of long-term business plans.

Key Skills And Experience
- Project and Team Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading large multidisciplinary project teams, with the ability to develop successful client and team relationships.
- Mechanical Engineering Expertise: A thorough understanding of mechanical building systems, with the ability to integrate diverse requirements into coordinated solutions.
- Middle East and Hotel Design Experience (Preferred): Experience in the Middle East market and/or in hotel design projects.
- Sustainability and Regulation Knowledge: Familiarity with sustainable design practices and local regulatory codes, along with an interest in emerging technologies.
- Commercial Acumen: Experience in resource planning, budgeting, and managing legal and contractual aspects of projects.
- Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills essential for team collaboration and effective client engagement.
Essential Qualifications
- Demonstrable experience as a mechanical engineer within the building engineering field, ideally with experience in luxury and hospitality sectors.
- Professional Status: Chartered Engineer status (e.g., IMechE or CIBSE).
- Business Development and Project Delivery Experience: Proven experience in both delivering successful projects and supporting business development initiatives.
