The School of Arts & Sciences / Department of Natural Sciences is currently looking for a
Chemistry Lab Supervisor, reporting to the Department Chair. This position is based on Beirut campus.
Role Summary
The
Chemistry Lab Supervisor is mainly responsible for the day-to-day operation of the chemistry lab, coordinating and organizing the different lab sections and experiments. S/he takes custody of all lab equipment and apparatus making sure they are in good operating condition, and ensures the proper scheduling of lab sessions.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Organizes and directs all daily activities of the lab such as preparing lab materials, setting up stations, calibrating equipment, and making necessary modifications before each lab session
- Oversees preparation of solutions, standards, reagents, and glassware; dispenses proper amounts of the reagents to students
- Coordinates with faculty and lab instructors to ensure that the quality and quantity of materials covered in the lab are similar in the different lab sections
- Maintains, calibrates, cleans, and tests laboratory equipment with the help of lab assistants
- Performs routine lab pre-testing for all experiments to validate their accuracy. Discusses recommended changes with concerned faculty to enhance the students experience and update lab manuals
- Stores and disposes hazardous wastes using safety procedures
- Prepares requisition orders for all supplies and equipment needed for the lab after consulting with the concerned faculty member(s). Prepares the specifications and the recommendations after thoroughly studying all the offers
- Stores and maintains adequate levels of supplies and oversees maintenance of equipment
- Maintains and updates the lab inventory which includes equipment, supplies, slides, chemicals, and experimental setups. Keeps track of borrowed items and ensures timely return
- Monitors lab safety measures and establishes necessary procedures and systems to avoid potential hazards. Maintains a neat and orderly work area
- Oversees safety of laboratories, performs quality checks, implements necessary measures to uphold safety standards, and provides safety training
- Develops standard operating procedures ensuring laboratory best practices
- Provides training on research and teaching equipment
- Prepares operating procedures for new equipment
- Provides backup support when needed, to ensure the continuity of operations
- Performs other duties pertinent to this job as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Chemistry
- Minimum 5 years of work experience, out of which 3 years are in a similar capacity
- Experience in using databases and software for the management of laboratory inventory is a plus
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students, staff, and faculty members
- Strong English and Arabic verbal and written communication skills
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office skills
- Experience in Oracle is a plus
- Excellent organization and management skills
