The Director of Urban Design is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the vision, strategy, and execution of urban design initiatives within the department. This position leads a multidisciplinary team of urban designers, planners, architects, and other professionals to create and implement sustainable, equitable, and innovative urban environments. The Director will collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including government agencies, private developers, community organizations, and civic groups, to shape the development of urban spaces that enhance quality of life, foster economic growth, and reflect the unique identity of the community.
The Director of Urban Design will also play a key role in shaping the long-term urban design policies and will provide leadership in addressing complex urban challenges, including density, sustainability, accessibility, and public space utilization.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management:
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Urban Design Department, including urban designers, architects, and planners, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth.
- Provide strategic direction for urban design projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with the overall goals of the organization or municipality.
- Oversee the department's operational budget, resources, and staffing needs.
- Serve as a key advisor to senior leadership on matters related to urban design, public space planning, and architectural development.
Urban Design Strategy:
- Develop and implement a long-term urban design strategy that enhances the aesthetic, social, and environmental quality of urban spaces.
- Provide creative leadership in the design of public and private spaces, ensuring that designs are sustainable, equitable, and functional.
- Integrate innovative technologies, environmental sustainability practices, and social equity principles into urban design solutions.
- Champion the integration of placemaking principles, community participation, and context-sensitive design into urban projects.
Project Oversight & Execution:
- Oversee the planning, design, and implementation of major urban development and redevelopment projects, including mixed-use developments, streetscapes, parks, and public spaces.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other departments, agencies, and external partners to ensure projects meet regulatory requirements, timelines, and budgets.
- Provide leadership in the review and approval of design concepts and plans, ensuring adherence to high design standards and local zoning regulations.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Engage with community members, local stakeholders, and advocacy groups to gather input and ensure that urban design projects reflect the needs and desires of the community.
- Facilitate public presentations, workshops, and charrettes to promote understanding and garner support for urban design initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with private developers, public agencies, and non-governmental organizations to support and advance urban design projects.
Policy Development & Advocacy:
- Lead efforts to influence urban design policy at local, regional, and state levels.
- Advocate for policies that promote sustainable growth, inclusive design, and equitable access to urban spaces.
- Work closely with local government officials to ensure urban design projects align with broader city planning and zoning strategies.
Research & Innovation:
- Stay current with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in urban design and architecture, ensuring the department remains at the forefront of innovation.
- Conduct research and analysis on urban design issues such as density, climate resilience, mobility, and social equity to inform decision-making and strategy.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
- Professional certification (e.g., AICP, LEED, or equivalent) is a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum of 7-13 years of experience in urban design, architecture, or urban planning, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.
- Proven track record of successful urban design project delivery, including experience with public space design, mixed-use developments, and large-scale urban redevelopment.
- Extensive experience working with diverse stakeholders, including local government, developers, community groups, and public agencies.
- In-depth understanding of urban design principles, zoning codes, environmental sustainability, and community engagement processes.
