Instrumentation and Control Technician

JOB PURPOSE:
- To apply specialist I&C expertise for the efficient working of the I&C Department at PP11 Power Plant;
- To ensure Plant I&C equipment is maintained as per procedures documented in the Maintenance Management System (SAP) as per instructions of the I&C Engineer(s);
- To assist the I&C Engineer in ensuring that all I&C equipment are well maintained and all notifications of planned and unplanned work are completed on time.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Description
Safety at Work
- Ensures a safe working environment for himself, his colleagues while working on any equipment;
- Ensures that there is a Permit to Work (taken by the I&C Engineer) for each job as necessitated by the PP11 Power Plant HSE Procedures put in place;
- Ensures all necessary precautions are taken by himself and Contractors while undertaking any jobs in PP11 Power Plant;
- Ensures that all necessary tools are available for the safe working on equipment and that are used during the performance of all jobs in the Plant;
- Points out any unsafe conditions to the I&C Engineer.
Maintenance Task Planning and Execution
- Completes all Work Orders generated in SAP as directed by the I&C Engineer;
- Generates reports (mainly log sheets/check sheets) as necessary for the maintenance done;
- Ensures that maintenance of all I&C equipment is in accordance with OEM Manuals for the equipment;
- Reviews I&C maintenance procedures and suggests improvements;
- Works to full potential and ensures that work is of very high quality.
Equipment Failure Trouble Shooting and Repair
- Supports reliable and accessible 24-hour call-out functionality;
- Attempts all possible means of reducing equipment downtime and ensuring high plant availability;
- Performs trouble shooting activities as necessary along with the I&C Engineer and colleagues to determine failure conditions and rectifies defects found;
- Records and reports to the I&C Engineer all rectification jobs undertaken;
- Works with Plant Operations Personnel for resolving problems encountered with mechanical equipment under the guidance of the I&C Engineer.
Reporting and Planning
- Discusses planned and unplanned jobs undertaken with the I&C Engineer;
- Assists the I&C Engineer in planning daily jobs.
Tools
- Ensures necessary tooling is available at work site during performance of any job;
- Uses correct tools for each job;
- Reports loss of tools or damage to any tools to the I&C Engineer;
- Informs the I&C Engineer of any requirements for tools;
- Ensures tools are in good working order.
Work Levels and Conditions and Risks:
Work Level 4: the tasks that he/she performs as part of their daily work activities represent a risk of accidents of medium kind that can generate permanent consequences (burns, mutilations, irreversible wounds);
Exposure to Risks:
- Traffic/automobile accidents, ergonomic problems and accidents;
- Risks inherent to the job of the I&C Technician while performing inspections, site visits, operations and maintenance activities, etc.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Hard hat/safety helmet;
- Ear protection (plugs or ear muffs);
- Safety glasses;
- Safety shoes;
- Dust mask;
- Cotton coveralls;
- Safety Gloves;
- Cotton vest;
- Respiratory mask.
PROBLEM SOLVING:
- The Job Holder is supposed to act and find solutions to (potential) problems within the Department; however he is responsible for keeping the I&C engineer informed.
- The thinking environment is characterized by diverse, standardized operating procedures;
- The Job Holder must consider how problems will be solved.The focus is on working with the I&C Engineer to apply learned techniques, maintenance experience, initiative and judgment at problem solving.
- Operates within the approved budgetary limits;
- The I&C Technician makes decisions within clearly defined parameters and under the guidance of the I&C Engineer;
- The I&C Technician makes decisions in line with company objectives and objectives of the Maintenance Department.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Essential Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Demonstrated competence supported with adequate education and training
Experience:
- At least 8 years experience in the I&C maintenance of a large combined cycle power plant, 3 of which must have been in the capacity of I&C Technician
- Use of safety systems
- Use of computerized maintenance management system
- Relevant experience in the instrumentation field is required, preferably in a combined cycle plant of industrial environment.
- Good experience in the maintenance and repair of power plant equipment, preferably in a power and desalination plant;
Operational plant or construction site experience is an advantage.
