Reports to: Senior Director, OSL
Purpose: The holder of this position works closely with the Dean of Students or designee to manage The American University in Cairo's (AUC) first year experience program for new undergraduate students, coordinating and implementing the recruitment, selection, development, supervision and assessment of at least 60 student leaders, providing budget planning, monitoring, and coordinating with other AUC departments for the necessary support of the program. He or She works with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, ALA on designing learning and development opportunities for student leaders and first year students. He or She is a member of the Orientation Steering Committee (OSC)
Responsibilities:
Supervises all aspects of the First Year Experience (FYE) program with an emphasis on program
content, student responsibilities, program development and project planning and implementation
Employs a best practice work ethic and acts as a role model for student leaders
Coordinates the recruitment, selection, development, supervision and assessment of 60 peer
facilitators annually
Advises and effectively communicates to peer leaders, and other student leaders as necessary, FYE Program's mission and the role of its peer leaders in achieving the mission
Leads, advises and coordinates training sessions for peer leaders throughout the year to develop leadership skills and become role models of effective leaders on and off campus
Serves as a member of the FYE Program advisory committee to consult and coordinate the design of the yearlong development program for peer leaders and the first-year students
Assists the Dean of Students or designee in transforming the learning outcomes articulated by the committee to a well-designed program for peer leaders and first year students
Advises the Dean of Students or designee on relevant and necessary FYE Program content and
assists in content design to introduce new undergraduates to AUC's intellectual, cultural and social life
Achieves and maintains knowledge of AUC resources for student support, campus wide, ensuring that knowledge is transferred to peer leaders and making referrals to first year students as needed
Assists the Dean of Students or designee in the adjustment process for students from under-
represented and marginalized groups, including outreach activities
Manages the planning, execution and the logistical aspects of the FYE program including
researching and securing supplies and materials for class assignments and yearlong activities,
preparing classroom material, recording student attendance, identifying and liaising with faculty
trainers
Researches and stays abreast of trends and latest developments in orientation programming at liberal arts institutions of higher education
Prepares and updates the FYE Program facilitation guide and orientation schedule
Coordinates with other AUC departments such as enrollment services, registrar, academic advisors, OSL, facilities, classroom technologies and others to coordinate the logistics of the program and ensure supports for first year student programs and activities
Builds and maintains the momentum built during orientation throughout the year, employing
follow-up communications, problem solving and referrals
Continues to develop and refine FYE Program to ensure sustainability and relevance for the coming years
Manages the development of publications, media and maintain the website, in consultation with the Student Life Communications unit
Manages student workers, assigning tasks and overseeing achieving results
Tracks and monitors the FYE Program budget in collaboration with the senior administrative
assistant
Attends all FYE Program meetings and activities on and off campus
Performs any other related duties as required
Requirements:
Minimum Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree is required
Master's degree in higher education or a related field is an asset
Experience:
A minimum of ten years of experience, including five years in an academic environment
