Job Title:Marine Surveyor Breakbulk Operations

Reports to:[Operations Manager/Port Supervisor/Marine Survey Manager]

Job Summary:

The Marine Surveyor for Breakbulk Operations is responsible for overseeing and inspecting the handling, loading, unloading, and stowage of breakbulk cargo at the port. This role ensures compliance with international safety and shipping standards while minimizing risks and ensuring the efficient flow of operations. The Marine Surveyor also provides detailed reports and recommendations to stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Cargo Inspection and Handling:

  • Inspect breakbulk cargo for damage, defects, or inconsistencies during loading and unloading operations.
  • Ensure proper handling techniques are used to prevent cargo damage and accidents.
  • Verify the condition and suitability of cargo packaging, securing materials, and lifting gear.

Vessel and Port Equipment Inspection:

  • Inspect vessels, including cargo holds and deck areas, to ensure suitability for breakbulk operations.
  • Verify the proper stowage and securing of cargo to prevent shifting during transit.
  • Ensure port equipment, including cranes, forklifts, and rigging gear, complies with safety standards.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Monitor operations to ensure adherence to international shipping standards (e.g., SOLAS, IMO regulations).
  • Enforce compliance with port and environmental regulations related to cargo handling and storage.
  • Identify potential risks and hazards during operations and recommend mitigation strategies.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, including photos, observations, and recommendations.
  • Verify cargo documentation, such as manifests and bills of lading, for accuracy and completeness.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to port authorities, shipping agents, and other stakeholders.

Coordination and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Liaise with shipping agents, vessel crews, port staff, and clients to ensure smooth operations.
  • Address concerns or disputes regarding cargo conditions or handling procedures.
  • Act as a technical advisor for clients on best practices for breakbulk operations.

Incident Investigation:

  • Investigate and document incidents involving cargo damage, operational delays, or safety violations.
  • Provide expert recommendations for corrective actions and process improvements.

Qualifications:

Education and Certifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications such as IMO/ISM Code training, Dangerous Goods Certification, or a Marine Surveyor Certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum [X] years of experience in marine surveying, port operations, or cargo handling, with a focus on breakbulk cargo.
  • Familiarity with international maritime regulations and port safety standards.

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of breakbulk cargo operations, including stowage and securing methods.
