Context
As part of the engineering team, the Materials Engineer will lead the technical management of material and component performance to improve liability, safety and reduce cost of concrete and earthworks.
The chosen candidate will be responsible for the design review and development of materials on this major rail project. Their expertise will lie in understanding the properties and behaviors of different substances, from raw materials to finished products.
Missions/Main Duties
- Checking the suitability of concrete mix designs.
- Working with the wider engineering team to identify, develop and implement appropriate materials improvement initiatives to improve safety, performance and cost
- Carrying out design reviews, investigations and testing to determine whether subcontractor chosen materials and processes are compliant
- Approving the best combination of materials for specific purposes
- Assessing materials for specific qualities such as electrical conductivity, durability and renewability
- Evaluating and contrasting material properties to determine feasibility or acceptability of proposed material substitutions
- Reviewing the implications of introducing new standards or revisions to existing standards on the materials used
- Identifying non-conforming work and / or materials, maintaining records and ensuring corrective action is taken by the contractors and closing out each issue
- Resolving technical queries regarding materials performance
- Reviewing and approving the contractors quality plans and procedures
- Considering the implications for waste and other environmental pollution issues of any product or process
- Reviewing and approving material test results to assess their resistance to environmental conditions such as heat, corrosion or chemicals
- Preparing technical reports for supplier contact reviews
- Managing the supplier audit plan and carrying out audits
- Attending sites to assist with advice where failures and specification deviations have occurred e.g cracking and surface defects in concrete, settlement and low test results in earthworks.
Profile/Skills
- Senior Professional shall have a technical / engineering related university degree
- Minimum Ten (10) years experience in the required field of expertise in Conventional Railway Project
- Experience working on heavy civil projects
- Knowledge of international standards related to material engineering
- Excellent written & spoken English language skills
- Knowledge of rail, metro or similar systems engineering principles and practice
- GCC project experience
