Job Description


Responsibilities
1. Develop, implement and evaluate assigned programmes/projects on sustainable development, environment sustainability, assessment and early warning; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions. 2. Perform consulting assignments on strategic and programmatic matters, especially in connection to sustainable development, achieving agenda 2030, in collaboration with the governments, UN system, NGOs, research institutions and the academy, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change. 3. Research, analyze and present economic, social and environment data, indicators and information gathered from diverse sources. Contribute to the population and maintenance of the regional data platforms and UNEP environment situation room. 4. Coordinate policy development on linkages between development and environment, strategic assessments, early warning systems and foresights, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies, 5. Generate survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identify problems / issues and prepares conclusions. 6. Organize and prepare background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, mainly state of environment and outlooks, sustainable development reports, national volumetry reviews (VNRs), strategic environment assessments etc. 7. Provide substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing concepts, agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations. 8. Initiate and coordinate outreach activities; conducts training workshops on strategic environment assessment, foresights, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. 9. Lead and/or participates in large, complex field missions focusing on assessing the state of environment and evaluation of causes of environmental degradation, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries. Serve as focal point for the assigned countries in the region with the aim to enhance partnerships between UNEP and these countries. 10. Coordinate activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget). 11. Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. 12. Perform other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environment, sustainable development, environmental management, environment policy, environmental economics or related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be acceptable in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience at an international level in development economics, sustainable development, environmental assessments and environmental information systems or related field is required. Experience in project or programme management and implementation is required. Experience in network development and management, including expert institutions, government agencies and donors is desirable. Experience in working with the UN or similar international organization is desirable. Experience in coordinating, editing and writing international and regional publications as well as strategy papers related to the environment and sustainable development is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English and Arabic is required. NOTE:
