Functional Responsibilities:
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
- Develop research related to the security track of the peace process including local power dynamics and mechanisms for cooperation.
- Conduct desk reviews of relevant case studies and academic literature.
- Carry out research in Yemen and the region as necessary; design interview tools; organize field trips; oversee data collection.
- Draft various reports with strategic recommendations for promoting ceasefire and strengthening local security efforts.
- Identify opportunities and recommendations for security arrangements that support long-term sustainability and peace.
- Provide insights into informal Yemeni structures and advice on how to engage actors on security and ceasefire related issues.
Education/Experience/Language requirements:
Education
- Advanced University Degree (Master's or equivalent degree) in International Relations, Development Studies or related fields.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience:
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in analysis of local governance structures or related areas.
- Demonstrated experience working with UN agencies and conducting field studies in the Middle East. Required
- Previous experience with mapping conflict dynamics in Yemen is encouraged. Desired
Languages
English and French are the work experience the UN Secretariat.
For the position advertised, English and Arabic is required.
Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
