Job Purpose
The Senior Animal Biologist is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the care, health, and well-being of all animals under the facility's care. This role leads a diverse team of specialized biologists and works closely with LSS technicians and aquadivers to ensure the highest standards of animal husbandry, research, and exhibit maintenance. The Senior Animal Biologist plays a crucial role in developing and implementing animal care protocols, conducting research, and contributing to the overall mission of the Corallium: Marine Life Institute.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of specialized biologists, including Veterinary, Biologist, Marine Reptiles & Avian Biologist, Elasmobranchii Biologist, Mariculture specialists, and Assistant Biologists.
- Collaborate with LSS technicians and aquadivers to maintain optimal living conditions for all animals in the facility.
- Develop, implement, and oversee animal care protocols and standard operating procedures to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and husbandry.
- Coordinate and oversee research projects related to animal behavior, health, and conservation.
- Monitor and maintain accurate records of animal health, behavior, and breeding activities.
- Work closely with the veterinary team to ensure prompt and effective medical care for all animals.
- Participate in the design and development of new exhibits and habitat improvements.
- Contribute to educational programs and public outreach initiatives related to marine life and conservation.
- Oversee the procurement and quarantine processes for new animals entering the facility.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant local and international regulations regarding animal care and conservation.
- Collaborate with other departments to support the overall goals and mission of the Corallium: Marine Life Institute.
- Participate in field research and conservation efforts as required.
- Manage budgets and resources for the animal biology team.
- Provide regular reports and updates to the General Curator on the status of animal collections, research projects, and team performance.
- Stay current with the latest developments in marine biology and animal care practices, implementing improvements as appropriate.

- Follow all relevant functional policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions to ensure that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
- Prepare accurate and timely functional MIS statements and reports to meet corporate and functional requirements, policies, and standards.
- Ensure all team members adhere to established protocols and best practices in animal care and research.
Safety, Quality & Environment
- Apply and enforce safety, quality and environmental management policies, procedures, and controls to ensure employee safety, legislative compliance, delivery of high-quality animal care, and responsible environmental practices.
- Conduct regular safety audits of animal habitats and work areas.
- Implement and maintain quality control measures for all aspects of animal care and research.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in animal care practices, research methodologies, and team performance.
- Stay informed about international best practices in marine biology and animal husbandry, and implement relevant improvements.
- Encourage and support professional development and learning opportunities for team members.
Job Requirements
Qualification and Experience
- Master's degree in Marine Biology, Zoology, or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in a professional aquarium or marine research setting, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Demonstrated expertise in the care and husbandry of a wide range of marine species.
- Proven track record of successful research projects and publications in the field of marine biology.
- Experience in managing and mentoring teams of specialized biologists.
- Familiarity with life support systems and aquarium technologies.
