al Mawrid, the Arab Center for the Study of Art- New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Senior Research Fellow to steer the Center's research functions and closely supports the Center's Principal director. The Senior Research Fellow is involved in research activities aiming at moving beyond the established canons of Art History by investigating the histories of art from the Arab world through advanced interdisciplinary research in the visual arts with al Mawrid's archive of primary documents. They will also contribute to the birth of a sustainable and much-needed archival resource, research, and pedagogy particular to the region.
This position reports into the Center's Principal Investigator.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. with a primary focus on the art and culture of the Arab world. The PhD will ideally be in Art History but may also be in another field with a minimum of 10-year experience in teaching art history or as a researcher in art and culture of the Arab world with peer-reviewed publications. Fluency in Arabic language is essential. Teaching and or leadership experience in the arts or at an academic institution and familiarity with contemporary archival practices and technologies will be an advantage.

al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art advances interdisciplinary study in the visual art of the Arab world. al Mawrid aims to move research and pedagogy beyond the established canons of Art History by investigating the histories of art that are particular to the region from a regional perspective. It does so in collaborative dialogue with the methods and debates of global art history and with the widening cultural horizons in both the Art and Humanities and the Social Sciences. al Mawrid's archive includes documents, images, and publications from the visual arts drawn from the archival collections of artists, cultural actors, and institutions with an initial focus on the early and modern period. al Mawrid acquires these archives on loan to digitize and document a rich collection of primary documents accessible to scholars and the public. The Center supports research fellowships and artists residencies, conferences, colloquia, workshops, and book publications.
