Job Purpose
Provides subject matter expertise and specialist support to assist in the effective implementation of EGA's environment management systems (EMS), operational and constructions control plans, and programs across EGA UAE plants, to ensure adherence with world class Environment control/protection practices in accord with international / local legislation and standards and improve EGA's environmental performance/footprints.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Contribution
- Contributes to the development and manages the implementation of EGA's environment strategy and policies in line with organisational goals and governmental requirements and objectives.
- Supports the development and updating of environment strategies and procedures in line with EGA's overall business direction.
- Supports the departmental objectives by ensuring smooth and timely achievement of targets as per the agreed KPIs.
Team Engagement
- Provides guidance and on the job training for junior colleagues and conducts knowledge sharing to facilitate achievement of team objectives and completion of tasks in an efficient manner which is consistent with operating procedures and policy.
- Promotes the organization's values and ethics in all activities within the team to support the establishment of a value drive culture within the organization.
Budgeting and Financial Performance
- Monitors the financial performance of a given area of activity versus budgets and ensures all activities are carried out in line with the approved guidelines while promptly reporting on any variances to management.
Policies, Systems, Processes & Procedures
- Manages and ensures effective implementation of policies, procedures and controls covering all areas of assigned department activity so that all relevant procedural/legislative requirements, fulfilled while delivering a quality, cost-effective service.
Management of Environment Initiatives
- Provides specialist support to EGA operations to ensure and maintain environmental compliance with federal, local, and Lenders requirements; and conformance with licenses and permits conditions
- Examines applicable laws and regulations, IFC guidelines, permits, licenses, applications, and records to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.
- Advises the Manager on environmental compliance issues and the impact of decisions as they pertain to environmental regulatory compliance.
- Plans, performs, and follows up environmental compliance inspections (construction and operation), site assessments, and environmental audits for applicability and compliance with relevant environmental laws and regulations.
- Interfaces with other departments for environmental problem solving from initial identification of environmental problem through post-implementation monitoring and provide specific advice /suggestions to relevant areas to improve performance.
- Supports the development and implementation of integrated management systems and ISO-14001.
- Identifies the various environmental permits, approvals, licenses, or authorizations required by EGA operations from the federal/local environmental authorities and ensure that such permits/approvals/licenses are obtained or renewed, as the case may be on time and maintain an up-to-date database.
- Undertakes as necessary investigations and reporting of Environment incidents (in conjunction with appropriate agencies - where required) and make recommendations because of the outcome of such incidents.
- Participates in discussions for the preparation of the annual budget of the environment department.
- Plans and participates in the organization of annual campaigns to sensitize company employees to various environmental issues.
Environmental Compliance Monitoring
- Manages and coordinates a team of technicians to carry out compliance environmental monitoring activities.
- Prepares tender documents and work with supply team to obtain the services of suppliers and consultants related to environmental monitoring activities and to ensure continuity in monitoring activities.
- Works with laboratories and external suppliers for the various studies and analyzes required as well as for the maintenance and calibration of environmental monitoring equipment.
- Supervises and follows up the budget of the monitoring activities. These include interaction with other departments and services providers for validating invoices and ensure respect of the budget.
- Reviews of environment monitoring data, reports and database and support investigation related to environmental monitoring results.
- Assists EGA Environment to the evaluation, analysis and compilation of operational environmental performance data and the preparation of internal and external reports.
- Maintains and updates environmental standard operating procedures related to environmental monitoring activities in line with ISO 14001 and ASI standards, as well as participate in certification audits.
- Participates in the annual audits of international lenders regarding environmental monitoring and the data collected.
- Plans and leads environmental monitoring studies with other departments and consultant.
Projects Environmental Management
- Supports the Major Projects and CAPEX team for all environmental aspects related to construction.
- Coordinates and assists in the development of management plans and project procedures for construction environmental compliance.
- Guides contractors to ensure compliance with environmental regulations, environmental management plans for construction as well as other stakeholders requirements.
- Coordinates and assists in the preparation of various written documents submitted to environmental regulatory authorities. These include review and approval of contractors reports related to projects construction environmental management.
- Ensures monitoring of construction activities and contractors laydown for all related construction environmental aspects. This includes evaluation of compliance of contractors against EGA environmental requirements and approved management plans.
- Supervises environmental monitoring activities to measures effectiveness of mitigation measures.
- Prepares and presents project progress and environmental performance to EGA management and other stakeholders.
- Leads the coordination of the organization of audits of international lenders, in relation to the IFC Performance Standards in terms of environmental and social sustainability as well as the Equator Principles, and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions, if necessary.
- Works with external consultants for the preparation of environmental studies related to projects.
Stakeholder Management
- Develops and maintains effective business relationships with all relevant internal departments and external stakeholders with highest standards of business ethics.
Continuous Improvement
- Leads the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement and sustainability of systems, processes and practices considering global standards, productivity improvement and cost reduction.
Environment, Health & Safety
- Ensures compliance to all relevant safety, quality and environmental management policies, procedures, and controls across the department to guarantee employee safety, legislative compliance, and a responsible environmental attitude.
Reporting
- Ensures that all unit reports are prepared timely and accurately and meets EGA requirements, policies, and quality standards.
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 years relevant experience in Environment in a similar manufacturing industry.
- Good knowledge in Greenhouse Gases (GHG) calculation.
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Science, or related field.
- Preferably a recognized ISO auditor certificate.
- Preferably an accreditation or membership to a recognised association.
Skills & Attributes
- Thorough knowledge of applicable environmental regulatory requirements of the Federal Environmental Agency (FEA), the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD), Abu Dhabi EHS management systems, Dubai Municipality, and international EHS standards.
- Well-developed communication skills, writing skills, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Accomplished ability in public speaking in the English language.
- Strong written and spoken English and preferably in Arabic.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft office programs; including Excel (ability to create basic mathematical formulas and graphs), Word, PowerPoint, email.
